Peter Riedemann: Shaper of the Hutterite Tradition

Peter Riedemann: Shaper of the Hutterite Tradition
Werner O. Packull
"In this book Werner Packull makes masterful use of existing records to present a definitive biographical account of Riedemann's eventful life as a long-term prisoner of conscience, Anabaptist, and Hutterian community leader. In the second part of the study, Packull analyzes Riedemann's literary legacy, providing readers with insight into Riedemann's creative appropriation of the Anabaptist tradition."

Kriszinkovich: An Annotated Hutterite Bibliography

An Annotated Hutterite Bibliography
Compiled by Maria H. Krisztinkovich
edited by Peter C. Erb

During more than three decades, Maria Krisztinkovich collected and organized references to Anabaptist-Hutterite materials. Her work as librarian at the University of British Columbia facilitated this task. Eventually her contact with professor Werner Packull led to the conversion of her massive Hutterite bibliography into a computer data base, a task overseen by professor Peter C. Erb of Wilfrid Laurier University. The resulting bibliography is a researcher's goldmine. Included in the more than 3,000 individual entries are many extremely rare items located in eastern European archives. In 1996 prof. Packull took the manuscript with him on his sabbatical leave to Europe. During this time, the eastern European entries were checked and corrected by Rev. Oliver E. Szebeni of Hungary. The usefulness of the bibliography is enhanced by English annotations, so that readers not conversant in eastern European languages can still benefit from all entries.

Michael Holzach The forgotten People

The Forgotten People: A year among the Hutterites
Michael Holzach

Michael Holzach retreated from the stressful bustle of the 20th century and had thrust himself into the serene but incongruous world of the Hutterites, a communal society dating back over 400 years. But what he found there was far from comforting.
What began as a simple experiment in "fly-on-the-wall" journalism soon became complicated by Holzach's struggle fully to know, fully to enter the Hutterite mind and heart.
The result is a book of extraordinary power, documenting not only the amazing history of a courageous and dedicated people, but also the sojourn of a person confronting his beliefs, his longings and his fears.

George Webber A World within

A World Within: An intimate portrait of the Little Bow Hutterite Colony
George Webber

When he found out that the Little Bow Hutterite Colony in southern Alberta was to be flooded upon completion of a nearby dam, award-winning documentary photographer George Webber visited the inhabitants. He hoped they would allow him to photograph them at work and at play, before their homes disappeared forever. Over the next four years Webber witnessed and photographed, gently and unobtrusively, the daily life in the colony and finally its abandonment. They welcomed him into their barns, gardens, kitchen, dining room, school, and - ultimately - their church. This mutual respect and affection is reflected in the remarkable photographs collected in A World Within.

The Potter's Art

The Potter's Art: Contributions to the Study of the Koerner Collection of European Ceramics
Edited by Carol E. Mayer

The essays in this book grew out of a meeting of international scholars, curators, and potters who came together in 1991 to share knowledge and ideas about the Koerner collection of European ceramics, which is housed at the University of British Columbia Museum of Anthropology.
This collection of ceramics is unique in Canada. It covers a range, both chronological and technical, that is rare in North American collections. The 600 pieces in the collection were made between 1500 and 1900 and were found in kitchens and dining-rooms as tools of food preparation, serving, and display; in cellars as storage containers; in churches as religious figures and containers for holy water; in pharmacies as containers of medicine; and in palaces as tiled stoves. In their many variations they represent an integral part of human history.

Andreas Ehrenpreis and Hutterite Faith and Practice

Andreas Ehrenpreis and Hutterite Faith and Practice
Wes Harison

Readers interested in the development of Radical Reforming groups, in the history of communal Christian groups, and especially in the history and development of the Hutterian Brethren, will want to read this detailed and well-crafted book.
The Hutterian Brethren, or Hutterites, had been practicing community of goods for more than a century when Andreas Ehrenpreis was elected bishop of the brotherhood in 1639. He was to occupy that office until his death in 1662, some 23 fateful years. In the face of severe crises, which included war, increased persecution, and the complete expulsion of the Hutterites from their former homes in Moravia, Ehrenpreis initiated a remarkable revival and reformulation of Hutterian faith and practice. Andreas Ehrenpreis' reforms left a lasting imprint on the Hutterites, leading the historian Robert Friedmann to call Ehrenpreis the "second founder" of the Hutterian Brethren.

Die Hutterer in Tirol

Die Hutterer in Tirol: Fruehes Taeufertum in der Schweiz, Tirol und Maehren

History of the Hutterites

The History of the Hutterites, Revised Edition
John Hofer

This comprehensive view of history concerns the early Hutterian Brethern. They are described as a group of Christians determined to give spiritual piety a priority in their daily lives. With a focus of devotion and earnestness which was seldom emulated within the universal history of Christian believers, the Hutterian Brethern attempted to restore the tenants of faith and life, which characterized the witness of the early church.
Twenty-three lessons are intended to instruct heritage to Hutterian youth. Their Apostolic Church history is recounted from Pentecost, according to the Bible in Acts 2, to the Great Reformation with the birth of Anabaptism. Upon the formation of the Hutterian Brethren, their trials, tribulations, and migrations are recounted through Western Europe, Eastern Europe, and North America.

Love is like fire

Love is like Fire: the confession of an Anabaptist prisoner
Peter Riedemann

Peter Riedemann (1506-1556) wrote this confession as a 23-year-old while imprisoned in Austria on account of his faith. At the time, the Anabaptists - spiritual forefathers of our Church Communities International movement - were being drowned, beheaded, and burned at the stake as heretics by the thousand for their commitment to baptism of believers, economic sharing, nonviolence, and the restoration of a New Testament Christianity free from state control and institutional hierarchy.
In addition to the confession are two important supplements: How We Should Build the House of God and The Seven Pillars of This House. These meditations, like the confession, are of a deeply spiritual character.

While in prison during 1540-42, Riedemann writes for the Lutheran ruler, Philip of Hesse. He explains the Hutterite goal of a renewed community and dispels popular misconceptions.
Riedemann creatively weaves together a fresh reading of the Bible with the classical creeds. He produces a powerful synthesis of Scripture and tradition on which to Christian community. His dynamic vision of radical and communal discipleship still challenges believers toward a greater faithfulness to the Lord and to each other.
Riedemann's Confession gives theological grounding for the Hutterite understanding of economic communalism and offers practical examples. It still guides Hutterite communities.
Here is John J Friesen's English translation of the 1565 German edition in which he offers a new history of Riedemann. Volume 9 in the Classics of the Radical Reformation series.
